A Touch of Ancient Greece: Storytelling Through Pottery
In the Autumn Term, Year 5 explore the fascinating world of Ancient Greece through the art of pottery. The children begin by studying real examples of Ancient Greek vases and discover how their beautiful designs told stories of gods, heroes, and everyday life.
Inspired by their learning, the children go on to design their own patterns and shapes before creating replica Greek-style pots using mod roc. It is a messy but marvellous process! Once dry, the pots are carefully painted in traditional colours and motifs — each one unique, creative, and full of character.
Take a look at the amazing work and see how we bring a touch of Ancient Greece to our classroom!
Painting
Painting the Rainforest – Inspired by John Dyer
In the Spring Term, Year 5 explore the vibrant artwork of John Dyer, a contemporary British artist celebrated for his bold colours and joyful depictions of nature. We study his rainforest paintings and discover how he uses bright tones and energetic brushstrokes to capture the life and movement of the jungle. Inspired by his style, we create our own rainforest paintings, experimenting with colour mixing, texture, and composition. Once our paintings are complete, we take our creativity a step further by exploring digital art using a painting app. We recreate and develop our rainforest scenes digitally, adding new layers, details, and effects to bring our ideas to life in a different way.
Drawing
Botanical Art – From Sketch to Stitch
In the Summer Term, Year 5 explore the beauty of plants and flowers through art and design. We begin by studying real-life specimens closely, observing their shapes, patterns, and textures. Using pencils and sketchbooks, we practise our drawing and shading techniques to capture the delicate details of petals, leaves, and stems. Next, we transform our drawings into a new form of art — embroidery! Using our sketches as inspiration, we carefully select threads and learn a variety of stitches to bring our botanical designs to life with colour and texture.
The result? A stunning collection of embroidered artworks that combine careful observation, creativity, and craftsmanship. Each piece is unique, celebrating both the artistry of nature and the talents of our Year 5 creators.
