Erupting with Colour: Exploring Volcano Art
We study the works of Turner and Warhol and compare their interpretations of volcanoes. We look at eruptions and flowing lava in the Immersive Classroom to get a feel for a real volcano, before drawing using a range of skills and techniques. We may decide to stay true to a realistic volcano, or we may add splashes of unrealistic colours, like Turner.

From Page to Sculpture: Creating Dragons Inspired by “How to Train Your Dragon”
“You will have to take my word for it, for the dragons are disappearing so fast they may soon become extinct. Nobody knows what is happening. They are crawling back into the sea from whence they came, leaving not a bone, not a fang, in the earth for the men of the future to remember them by.” Hiccup. How to Train Your Dragon.
In the Spring Term, Year 4 seize the opportunity to ensure that dragons are not forgotten and immortalise them in clay sculptures. We use different tools and sculpting techniques to create intricate detail and pattern to replicate the beast’s scales. Professor Yobbish would be proud!

Riding the Wave: Exploring Japanese Art
We dive into the world of Japanese art, inspired by the iconic painting, The Great Wave Off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai. After studying the techniques and symbolism behind this famous work, the children create their own vibrant interpretations of the wave using paint, colour blending, and brushwork techniques.
Building on this, they explore the traditional art of ukiyo-e — Japanese woodblock printing. Each artist designs and carves their own block print, capturing scenes from nature, daily life, or imaginative landscapes. The result is a stunning collection of unique prints that celebrate both the beauty of Japanese art and the creativity of our budding artists!
