Journey to the Stone Age: Exploring Art from the Past

In the Autumn Term, we travel back in time when reading ‘Stone Age Boy’ and begin our investigations into this period in history by exploring the cave drawings that have been discovered in many parts of the world. We can learn so much about pre-historic civilisations from the artwork that they left behind. We explore a range of drawing techniques and use different mediums such as charcoal and chalk drawn onto textured paper to replicate a mural on a cave wall.

Sculpting Our Heritage: Clay Creations Inspired by Ryhope

In the Spring Term, Year 3 explore the world of sculpture by creating their own clay models of a symbol of our local heritage. After learning about the history of the Ryhope, the children use their imagination and hands-on skills to shape and mould their own historical themed sculpture.

They experiment with techniques such as pinching, rolling, and joining clay to bring their sculptures to life—paying special attention to details. Each sculpture is unique, showing both creativity and a strong sense of local pride.

Kandinsky and the Art of Feeling Through Colour

In the Summer Term, we explore Kandinsky’s colourful and abstract paintings. He believed that art should express feelings just as music does. As artists, we consider how colour can affect how we feel about something and how it has the potential to change our mood. We mix colours and create a final piece inspired by the artist to express personal thoughts and feelings.
